Poems for Christmas: A Catalan tradition

On Christmas Day after lunch children stand on a chair and say a poem they have learnt at school to their families. If they are lucky and they know the poem by heart they get some money from their relatives. It's usually a touching moment.
This year 3rd and 4th graders have studied a Catalan poem and also an English poem: Snowball by Shel Silverstein.

By: Shel Silverstein

I made myself a snowball
As perfect as could be.
I thought I'd keep it as a pet
And let it sleep with me.
I made it some pajamas
And a pillow for it's head.
Then last night it ran away,
But first-it wet the bed.

Our healthy salads

As this term we've been working on Nutrition (Science in English) we decided to prepare healthy balanced salads with all kind of nutrients: carbohydrates, proteins, fats, fibre, vitamins and minerals. They were delicious! Some videos are coming soon!

Els tres reis (3 Kings): A Spanish Tradition

It's a religious tradition inspired by the Three Wise Men. It's similar to Santa Claus.
For Christmas, children write a list of presents they want from the Kings.
On the 5th of January there are parades in every village or town. The children can see the 3 Kings and sing a song for them. When they go back home they leave out biscuits and 3 glasses of milk to say thank you and they go immediately to bed. On the 6th of January the children wake up to find the presents underneath the Christmas Tree.

El Tió: a Catalan Tradition

A tió is a magic piece of wood (log).
There's a tió in every house.
Throughout the month of December, the children feed the tió.
After dinner on the 24th of December, children hit the tió with a stick and sing a magic song to him. If you are lucky, the tió shits presents . This is one version of the song

Monkey Tricks

Listen to some of the 5th graders saying the poem Monkey TrickS by John Rice.

Monkey tricks

Deep in the jungle
where the sun  never shines
see the Mighty Monkey
swinging on the vines.
Deep in the jungle
climbing up the trees
see the Mighty Monkey
bend her hairy knees.
Deep in the jungle
where the tall tree grows
see the Mighty Monkey
scratch her coconut nose.
Deep in the jungle
hear the drums beat
see the Mighty Monkey
shake her dancing feet.

Do you like spaghetti? 4th graders do. And now they can say a funny poem by Jack Prelusky dedicated to them.

Spaghetti! Spaghetti!
You’re wonderful stuff,
I love you spaghetti,
I can’t get enough,

You’re covered with sauce
And you’re sprinkled with cheese,
Spaghetti! Spaghetti!
Oh, give me some please.

We feel this is going to be a fantastic one: Science in English in 5th and 6th levels, an American girl helping us with your speaking skills, theatre, films, songs, games, blogs... and lots of new ideas to make your English improve.

Monday, 17 May 2010

Last Friday Peter Redmond came to our school.

He works at Girona's University. He's a friend of our teacher, Josep.

He's Irish-American. His grandparents were Irish and went to New York one hundred years ago.

Now Peter lives in Figueres. His wife is from Polland so he speaks English and Polish. He also speaks French and Catalan.

When he was in the USA he lived near New York's airport.

He thinks that New York is a fascinating city but he doesn't miss New York. He misses his family (He's got seven brothers and sisters).

We talked a lot about New York and the USA.

In the USA there are American flags in every classroom.

He thinks that Americans are more friendly that Catalan people.

From Peter's experience, New York is not a dangerous city. In New York, he likes baseball (He's a Mets' supporter) and the Museum of Natural History.

Peter spoke slowly and very clear so it was not difficult to understand him. We liked his talk very much and it was very interesting.

Thank you very much for coming to our school.

And thank you for your joke! (“The niece” and “The nephew”)

Last Friday an astronomer was in our classroom (6th grade). Her name is Marta.
She was nervous at the beginning but at the end she was relaxed.
She explained the phases of the moon and the seasons with models of the Earth and the Moon. The sun was a projector.
She told us the theory of the Drop Moon. Milion of years ago when the Earth was melted, a celestial body got into the Earth and a drop of the Earth went away. The Moon was created.
She also told us about the size of the stars, planets and other celestial bodies.
It was very interesting but some vocabulary was a bit difficult. We liked the talk.
Thank you Marta for coming to our school!
